LEGISLATURE FORMS SPECIAL COMMITTEE ON WELFARE REFORM
The Senate and Assembly have created the 18-member Special Committee
on Welfare Reform.
Members
Co-Chairs from the Senate are Diane Watson and Mike Thompson.
Other Senators include Jim Brulte, Patrick Johnston, Barbara Lee,
Ken Maddy, Hilda Solis, John Vasconcellos, and Cathie Wright.
Co-Chairs from the Assembly are Dion Aroner and Carole Migden.
The other members are Roy Ashburn, Tom Bordonaro, Valerie Brown,
Bill Campbell, Denise Ducheny, Antonio Villaraigosa, and Roderick
Wright.
Schedule of Hearings
The Special Committee on Welfare Reform will meet frequently, perhaps
weekly, for hearings.
The first meeting was February 12. The topic was an Overview of
federal law and major proposals.
Future meetings will be informational on the profile of recipients,
what other states are doing, and field visits to a community center
to meet with a cross section of recipients.
Standing policy committees will meet simultaneously, to consider specific
proposals in more detail.
The goal is to have a plan prior to the May budget revision and
to make it final after the governor presents his May revision.
